Ice Age Storyline
Back when the Earth was being overrun by glaciers, and animals were scurrying to save themselves from the upcoming Ice Age, a stupid sloth named Sid, a woolly mammoth named Manny, a saber-toothed tiger named Diego, and an acorn-loving saber-toothed squirrel named Scrat are forced to become unlikely heroes. The four reluctantly come together when they have to return a human child to its father while braving the deadly elements of the impending Ice Age.

Ice Age trivia
- The responsibility for animating Sid's snowboard sequence was given to animators who went snowboarding in real life.
- The only stipulation that consulting anthropologists from the American Museum of Natural History in New York insisted on with the production was that there should be no dinosaurs. They would have been long gone 20,000 years ago, though a great deal of the animals shown in the film didn't live in the same eras or locations as the main characters. Dinosaurs were finally included in the second sequel, _Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)_ (qv), the explanation being that they survived extinction in underground caves.
- The baby's name is apparently Roshan.
- The first drawings seen in the cave (before entering the giant area with the mammoth drawings) are replicas of the earliest known cave drawings (found at Lascaux, in the south of France). They have been dated at somewhere between 15,000 and 17,000 years old.
- When Sid, Manny, Diego and the baby are walking through the ice cave, they walk past a UFO frozen in a block of ice, as they walk past, the baby does the Vulcan hand salute (from _"Star Trek" (1966)_ (qv)). The UFO itself is a possible reference to the frozen UFO from _The Thing (1982)_ (qv).
Ice Age goofs
- CONT: In the first camp-out scene with Diego, Diego is sleeping close to the rock wall when Sid returns. There is an overhead shot, and he is only a few feet away from Manny and Sid. Later, in another shot, just before he gets up, he is back by the wall.
- DATE: Many of the animals seen in the film never saw each other because they lived in different time periods or regions.
- CONT: Sid's position beside the fire changes when his tail catches fire.
- CONT: At the end of the movie, "Pinkie's" father places his wife's necklace on Manfred's trunk. A few moments later, the necklace has disappeared.
- CONT: The first animal to step on Scrat in the opening is a mammoth, yet no mammoth is visible in the long shot of the crowds of animals. In fact, no mammoth other than Manfred is seen throughout the sequence. With this, a large bird also steps on Scrat, but no birds are seen in the crowds. We also only see two legs of each animal stepping on Scrat even though three of them are quadrupeds.
