Flash of Genius Storyline
Based on the true story of college professor and part-time inventor Robert Kearns' (Greg Kinnear) long battle with the U.S. automobile industry, Flash of Genius tells the tale of one man whose fight to receive recognition for his ingenuity would come at a heavy price. But this determined engineer refused to be silenced, and he took on the corporate titans in a battle that nobody thought he could win. The Kearns were a typical 1960s Detroit family, trying to live their version of the American Dream. Local university professor Bob married teacher Phyllis (Lauren Graham) and, by their mid-thirties, had six kids who brought them a hectic but satisfying Midwestern existence. When Bob invents a device that would eventually be used by every car in the world, the Kearns think they have struck gold. But their aspirations are dashed after the auto giants who embraced Bob's creation unceremoniously shunned the man who invented it. Ignored, threatened and then buried in years of litigation, Bob is haunted by what was done to his family and their future. He becomes a man obsessed with justice and the conviction that his life's work-or for that matter, anyone's work-be acknowledged by those who stood to benefit. And while paying the toll for refusing to compromise his dignity, this everyday David will try the unthinkable: to bring Goliath to his knees.

Flash of Genius goofs
- DATE: Dr. Kearns's first patent for intermittent wipers was filed on December 1, 1964. Ford already had a system in production by 1965, same year of the car he drives in the start of the movie. They were sold on Mercurys and Comets. They were mechanical vacuum bleed timing devices, but worked well over a wide range of delay.
- DATE: The 1968 Lincoln Mark III he drives to Ford, with the invention installed, had hydraulic wiper motors running off the power steering pump. They were used on Mark III's because Mercedes did, and they were very quiet. It wasn't until 1971 that they used electric intermittent wipers on them.
- DATE: As the Kearns family is proposing a toast in the diner (celebrating his invention), you can see a white 2008 Acura pulling out of the garage across the street.
- FACT: Kearns says in his interview with Ford that he is a graduate of Case Western. Case Western Reserve University was not created until the 1967 merger of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University. Kearns' patent for the wiper was filed Dec. 1, 1964, well before the merger of the two universities. Kearns' 1963 meeting with Ford also happened before the merger of the universities. Kearns received his PhD from Case Institute of Technology.
- DATE: Ford had electric intermittent wipers available for the full size models by 1968, same year as the Lincoln Mark III they installed his invention on. The Ford version also had a "ready" and "park" position, which his didn't.
