There Will Be Blood Storyline
Set in the early 20th century, the film follows the rise to power of Daniel Plainview — a charismatic and ruthless oil prospector, driven to succeed by his intense hatred of others and psychological need to see any and all competitors fail. When he learns of oil-rich land in California that can be bought cheaply, he moves his operation there and begins manipulating and exploiting the local landowners into selling him their property. Using his young adopted son H.W. to project the image of a caring family man, Plainview gains the cooperation of almost all the locals with lofty promises to build schools and cultivate the land to make their community flourish. Over time, Plainview's gradual accumulation of wealth and power causes his true self to surface, and he begins to slowly alienate himself from everyone in his life.

There Will Be Blood trivia
- In the summer of '06, during filming, a photographer snapped an onset photo of a person they believed to be 'Daniel Day-Lewis' (qv), albeit with a great deal of physical alterations. The photo appeared used on various film websites and in magazines as an example of how drastically Day-Lewis had changed himself for the role. Upon viewing the film and applying common sense, it turns out, this person was NOT, in fact, Daniel Day-Lewis; it was instead actor 'Vince Froio' (qv), who portrayed Plainview's "closest associate" at the end of the film.
- 'Daniel Day-Lewis' (qv) improvised the speech he gives to the citizens of Little Boston, about building schools, bringing bread to the town, etc. 'Paul Thomas Anderson' (qv) says of this, "It was delicious. It was Plainview on a platter."
- Although the screenplay is based on the 'Upton Sinclair' (qv) novel 'Oil!', 'Paul Thomas Anderson' (qv) used only the first 150 pages for a big portion of the material. The rest was made up. The novel's setting was in 1920s but it was moved to the beginning of the oil boom in California.
- 'Paul Thomas Anderson' (qv) planned to have the restored bowling alley (used at the climax) located at the Greystone Mansion to be entirely painted in white to give some Kubrick symmetry and menacing quality (also a nod to _A Clockwork Orange (1971)_ (qv)). However, he changed it to its original state when it was later decided that the bowling alley was to be given away for ownership after filming.
- 'Daniel Day-Lewis' (qv) used oral histories from the time period to create Plainview's distinctive voice.
There Will Be Blood goofs
- CONT: In the bowling alley scene, Eli is clearly visible placing Daniel's refused drink above the center panel on the paneled divider. After the cutaway to Daniel, the drink is not above the center panel, but above the panel adjacent to the center one.
- DATE: 'Daniel Day-Lewis' (qv)' pierced earlobes are apparent in close-up profile shots.
- DATE: A fireside scene reveals Plainview's boot to have a waffle sole. The waffle sole was not invented nor used until the early-mid 70's.
- DATE: After H.W. returns, when he and his girlfriend are playing, in a close up you can clearly see that she has two, maybe three pierced earing holes.
- CREW: During the tracking shot from the train tracks that follows the car of Daniel Plainview, you can see the dolly track for a moment when the camera pulls back, just before the camera pans to the right.
